Top Summer Albums

summer cocktails Who doesn’t want to know what some of my favorite summer albums are? I know you have all probably been holding your breathe just hoping this post would eventually come up.  Well here it is!! Start breathing again and get ready to start putting together some of the best summer BBQ playlists you’ve ever had. You will gain new friends, impress the neighbors and probably even get it a little more often from the significant other (or even random strangers who wander into your yard just to listen to your sweet summer mix).

Oh….you thought I was going to just give you a list of albums to go download? What fun would that be? I think i’ll stretch this out for all it’s worth. It’ll get me several more posts on the old blog and keep you entertained for weeks instead of a simple quicky. Don’t worry I’ll sum it all up later….hell, I’ll even create my ultimate summer mega-mix for you to compile just in time for your big Fourth of July BBQ.

Starting tomorrow I’ll go over my choices for albums you NEED to listen to this summer (or any damn summer really) as well the highlight song on that album to be added to your megamix.  No, they aren’t all new albums you need to check out this summer, no summer mix can consist solely of shit no one has ever heard before, there needs to be classics, soon-to-be classics and those few weird songs which make everyone question your sanity and taste in music.

Matt & Kim make me happy

Posted in music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 23, 2009 by JD

Two things you need to know about Matt & Kim:

1) They have got to be the happiest musical duo I have ever seen and you can tell why when you hear the music they play. I challenge you to not smile when you listen to it.

2) Kim is  beyond cute and I have a celebrity crush on her (sorry Matt).  That big smile and those pearly whites make me all twitterpated. (I know she probably wouldn’t be classified as a celebrity, but she is in a band and I can’t have real crushes because I am married, so it has to be a celebrity crush).

Be sure to watch the video above in it’s entirety because it will give you the perfect idea of what this dynamic duo is all about – Fun, happy music played by fun happy people.  Those of you in Canada probably recognize the song above from the Virgin mobile commercials which would have quickly gotten old if it weren’t for that catchy tune.  They recently released their 2nd album, “Grand” and although not quite as bubbly as their first effort, it will equally bring a big grin to your face with each listen.

Matt & Kim are the perfect band to help bring you into spring and prepare for those long summer days having nothing but fun in the sun.  Jump on the bandwagon now folks, these two are going to explode this summer, just you watch.

Stuck for Days

Posted in music with tags , , , , , , , , , , on January 26, 2009 by JD

I have had this song stuck in my head for the past damn near week straight. No, it’s not new but it sure is catchy. You listen to it once and it’s stuck. I’ve been repeating “Die, Die, Die…Die, Die, Die, Die, Die” in my head as I try to go to sleep at night.  Damn you Avett Brothers, damn you for writing extremely catchy alt-country-folk music that I can’t help but sing along to…and along to…and along to.

Give the album a listen if you get the chance – Avett Brother “Emotionalism”.  It has some damn catchy tunes on it and a few that may even bring a tear to your eye (if you are human).

Rockabye Baby…..Really??

radio2

Before our baby was born, I was on the hunt for music to play to the tiny lady while still swimming around inside my wife’s stomach (yes, I know babies don’t really grow in stomachs).  I found an article somewhere about the Rockabye Baby series of discs, which consists of some of the more popular songs from mainly alternative and/or rock bands re-recorded as lullabies.

I downloaded a couple songs from each of a few albums to give them a listen, not knowing exactly what to expect.  What did I find?? These albums are crazy good. …and not just for kids.  I find myself listening to them even when my daughter is not around. Whoever came up with this idea is a damned genius. They are basically just lo-fi instrumental versions of hits from some of the best bands out there now and from back in music history.  You can choose from Metallica, Coldplay, Tool, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Bjork….etc, etc.  Click on the link above to see all 25 albums available.  My favorite by far is the Radiohead album.  It’s almost as if these songs were originally written with the intent to be lullabies.

Don’t have a baby? It doesn’t matter, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
