The Ettes – “Look at Life Again Soon”

Posted in music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on March 31, 2009 by JD

theettesGarage rock at it’s absolute finest is to be found right here with The Ettes.  Think The Kills with a faster beat and a cup or two of 60’s garage mixed in with just a pinch of Motown pop, and you’ve got yourself The Ettes. You can just see the attitude oozing from the members in the picture at your left and to add to the attitude, their names are simply Coco, Jem and Poni.  Awesomeness factor 5 right there folks.

“Looking at Life Again Soon” is their second album and the 12 songs contained within log in at just over 30 minutes total. Needless to say, you will want to listen to it over and over again.  Said to be influenced by The Ramones, The Rolling Stones and Nancy Sinatra, you can surely hear all of those influences at work on this album. This is a rockin’ album filled with gritty, fuzzy guitar, simple but big beats and vocals that have that Motown groove but dirty rock swagger.

In keeping with the short and sweet reviews….give The Ettes a listen. I like them, and have added them to my “I wish spring would hurry up and get it’s ass here” playlist…..you will too.

Tristan Eaton and Dell….really??

Posted in toys with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 24, 2009 by JD

I pretty much have this man to blame for my obsession with collectible vinyl toys. One of the main artists to help get Kidrobot off the ground, the founder of Thunderdog Studios and pretty much the sole person to meld street art and toys together and then pretty much take it mainstream (in my eyes anyway). This guy is just pure awesomeness in my book and I really wish I could have 1/2 the success he has had doing something I love (art). I think you all might be surprised at how many of you have seen this man’s artwork already, just take a look at the client list at the website above.

To be honest with you, when I saw the video above I thought to myself, “Dell!!!….really?? Come on Tristan”, but then I gave it a bit more thought and realized how happy I would be if I was ever commissioned by anyone to put my artwork on something to be seen worldwide by people from all walks of life. I am happy for the guy, all an artist ever wants is for his artwork to be seen and appreciated by many without having to compromise his vision.

Be sure to check out all 3 designs here, and hey….if you haven’t been convinced yet that Apples are the only computers anyone should own (they are btw) then you can go here and buy one for yourself.

Matt & Kim make me happy

Posted in music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 23, 2009 by JD

Two things you need to know about Matt & Kim:

1) They have got to be the happiest musical duo I have ever seen and you can tell why when you hear the music they play. I challenge you to not smile when you listen to it.

2) Kim is  beyond cute and I have a celebrity crush on her (sorry Matt).  That big smile and those pearly whites make me all twitterpated. (I know she probably wouldn’t be classified as a celebrity, but she is in a band and I can’t have real crushes because I am married, so it has to be a celebrity crush).

Be sure to watch the video above in it’s entirety because it will give you the perfect idea of what this dynamic duo is all about – Fun, happy music played by fun happy people.  Those of you in Canada probably recognize the song above from the Virgin mobile commercials which would have quickly gotten old if it weren’t for that catchy tune.  They recently released their 2nd album, “Grand” and although not quite as bubbly as their first effort, it will equally bring a big grin to your face with each listen.

Matt & Kim are the perfect band to help bring you into spring and prepare for those long summer days having nothing but fun in the sun.  Jump on the bandwagon now folks, these two are going to explode this summer, just you watch.

Not really creepy, just damn good

Posted in music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 20, 2009 by JD

creepy_1There are those albums which you don’t listen to for a while and you remember them as being incredibly good, but you don’t realize exactly how incredibly good they are until you pop them on the stereo after a long hiatus.

Into another’s “Creepy Eepy” is one of those albums. Although it is only a 4 song EP, you could technically call it Into Another’s sophomore effort, as you can definitely hear a huge difference between what is on this album, what appeared on their initial release and what they put out on the album to follow this one; Ignaurus.

In my opinion, these 4 songs are some of the best material Into Another put out.  Just straight-forward pure post-hardcore goodness.  You can’t beat Richie’s voice and Peter takes his guitar to a whole new, almost metal level. Tony has one of the craziest bass solos you have ever heard on “Absolute Zero”, which closes out the song; and Drew…..the most fashionable drummer you have ever seen….lays down some of the craziest beats.

One of my favorite lines of any song ever comes off of this album, from the song “I’ll Be Damned”: “We call earth mother, but we are all mother fuckers. We drink her blood eat her flesh, take her love for granted. We feed her poison and in return we’ll reap what we’ve planted rest assured.”

This album started my weekend off on the right foot today.  What album is your Creepy eepy? That album you know is good, but sometimes you forget just how good.

GI Joe -vs- Robocop

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 12, 2009 by JD

accelerator-suit-duke-packageaccelerator-suit-duke-figure I have to admit that I am actually pretty excited to see hollywood completely murder GI Joe with a big budget version full of overpaid actors and special effects galore and a horrible script. As if the cartoon had fantastic writers and was a high quality thought-provoking insight into the military mind. All in all, I am excited to see my favorite cartoon growing up on the big screen in live-action, but I am not expecting to say much more than “wow, that had a lot of action” when I leave the theatre.

One of my tweeps on twitter posted a link to the new Destro toy this morning, but the link ended up taking me to a video of a group singing Nintendo theme songs accappella instead. So I went out on my own search, because I needed to see this new Destro toy (Destro was always one of my favorites as a 10 year old).  What do I come across in my search?  Robocop Duke!! Honestly, WTF folks!?!?!  This is horrible.  If this is actually in the movie I think I might laugh hysterically. I hope to god this is not a glimpse of what is coming ou way this summer.

hockey-light Here is one for you my Canadian friends.  Who wouldn’t want an entire hockey arena hanging over their dinner table, eh?  To think that this could be all yours and you could be enjoying the feel of a hockey game at your next dinner party is well worth the $225 you pay for it. Wait, make that $270 (cdn).  Head on over to Lighting by LUX and check it out.
